Two Years After Leaving My Wife for My Mistress, I Was Broke and Alone, So I Went Back to Beg Her Forgiveness, but Someone Unexpected Opened the Door

I knocked on the door of my own house like a stranger.

Three knocks. Not too loud. I had practiced that too, sitting in my car at the end of the street for forty minutes with the engine off, watching the porch light come on at dusk. How hard to knock. What to say. Where to put my hands. I’d practiced it the way I used to practice sales pitches in the mirror back when I still thought I was the kind of man who could talk his way into anything.

The porch was freshly painted. A soft gray, not the faded white I remembered. There were new flower boxes under the front windows, full of red geraniums. The broken step I’d promised to fix for three years was fixed. Someone had replaced the porch light with one of those old-fashioned lanterns Helena always liked and I always said was too expensive.

Life had clearly moved on without me.

I stood there with my hands in my jacket pockets because I didn’t know what else to do with them. I had eleven dollars in my wallet. Everything else I owned was in the trunk of a 2009 Corolla with a cracked windshield and a check engine light that had been on since March.

I heard footsteps inside. The lock turned.

I took a breath and got ready to say the words I’d been rehearsing for two days. Helena, I know I don’t deserve this. I know I hurt you. I made the biggest mistake of my life. Please. I just need somewhere to stay. Just for a while. Just until I get back on my feet.

The door opened.

And everything I’d planned to say went right out of my head.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. If I’m going to tell this story honestly, and I’ve promised myself I would, I have to start at the beginning. I have to tell you who I was. Because the man standing on that porch didn’t get there by accident. He got there one stupid, selfish step at a time.

What happened next changed everything… FULL STORY on the next page.
